Royce’ chocolates and confectioneries available at Narita and Haneda Airports now 1. Narita Airport : Terminal 2
Except by mail order or at exhibitions of specific Hokkaido products, Royce’ confectionary could almost only be bought in Hokkaido prefecture. Recently, sales have started at the international terminals of Narita and Haneda airports. The shops are located only in tax-free areas, so passengers leaving for foreign countries can purchase them after passing the passport control. The other day I myself went to the airports and visited the shops. I will describe what is going on there.

Narita airport consists of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 buildings. The airport is so large that you can only go from one terminal to the other by bus. First, I went to Terminal 2.
Terminal 2 is mainly used by airlines that belong to the Oneworld Alliance. JAL is one of them. Behind the passport control, shops of famous brands are lined up. It is crowded with passengers leaving for several different countries: indeed you breathe the atmosphere of an international airport. Terminal 2 consists of the main hall and the satellite buildings where you have to go by a vehicle called “the shuttle”. Sales of Royce’ products started at 3 shops in the main hall. After passing the passport control, at your right and at you left you will find very long passageways. This is the place where the media chase after major baseball players and professional entertainers when they leave for foreign countries: a walkway so long that you hardly can see the end.
When you walk to the right soon behind passing the passport control, there is the “Blue Sky Shop Gate 63”, near gate 63.
Indeed, in the refrigerator show case with the Royce’ logo, Nama chocolates and potato chips chocolates are displayed. The price tag of the Nama chocolate is in 4 languages: besides Japanese, also English, Chinese and Korean.
The consumption tax is not applied behind the passport control.
According to the shopkeeper, passengers from all over the world with Manila, Shanghai, Hong Kong, London, Milano, Korea, etc. as main destinations gather here. It looks all so pleasant. Shops in international airports are crammed with many products. Here for example you can eat SOBA (buckwheat noodles). Also, medicines for colds seem to sell well. Of course, there are a lot of souvenirs. Many sorts of cleansing cream, hairdressing, etc are lined up. Saying this, when I went abroad previously, I bought a new ball pen. There were so many that I was at a loss in the choice.
In the opposite direction of the spacious main hall, when you walk to the left after passing the passport control, you will find the Blue Sky Shop Gate74.
Like in the Gate 63 shop here also several kinds of products are displayed. “Sapporo La-men Noren” (store curtains with Sapporo Noodles printed on it) and “Akacho-chin” (Japanese gourmet eateries decorated with red paper lanterns) are the landmarks. When you make use of gates 71-77, don’t miss to have a look.
Terminal 2 is extremely large. There are also shops at gates 72 and 62, which are open when there are departures. Here also you can buy Royce’ products.

I went to Terminal 1, too. Terminal 1 is mainly used by airlines that belong to the Star Alliance (ANA, etc.) and airlines belonging to the “Sky Team” alliance (KAL, etc.)
After passing the passport control of the South Wing, tax-free shops are line up. “These are called the Narita Nakamise (Nakamise: shops lining a passageway in the precincts of a shrine)” explained the shopkeeper. Surely, the lively atmosphere reminds of the Asakusa Nakamise.
When you walk a little to the left after passing the passport control, you will see the Royce’ electronic signboard.
The shops here are called the Fa-So-La TAX FREE shops of the South Wing, located near gate 51. Among the shops crammed with Japanese foodstuff and souvenirs, the refrigerator showcase of Royce’ can be seen. When asking the shopkeeper, he says: ”There are passengers who, while waiting for boarding the plane, say that they want to eat something and therefore buy Nama Chocolates. Not only Japanese and Asian people but also many Europeans. ” The shopkeeper continues: ”Even passengers from Europe, the home of chocolate, say that they buy Japanese chocolate because it is just delicious.

After making a tour of the shop at Narita Airport, I went to Haneda Airport. Although Haneda has the strong image of being a local airport, it is international as well. There are charter flights to Korea.
In the second floor, there is a huge tax-free shop. On top of the standard brand-name goods, liquors, cigarettes and souvenirs, here chocolates and cookies are the most popular products too.
On the photo, there are many shops lined up.
Because almost all passengers are businessmen and tourists coming from and going to Japan or Korea, some of the shop staff speaks good Japanese and Korean. When I asked one of staff: Which of the Royce’ products do you like best?” The answer was: “Potato Chip Chocolates are unique and delicious. Because of their balanced sweetness, “Nama” chocolates are also delicious. Very recommendable to all passengers of international flights!”
